LG Chem (previous name: Lucky Goldstar Chemical) is the largest Korean chemical concern, founded in 1947. After a fusion with LG Petrochemical Co. in 2007, the company has significantly expanded their product portfolio. Three major segments can be identified: Polymers (and industrial materials), IT and Electronics, and Batteries. In their 8 manufacture plants across Korea, LG Chem currently produces petrochemical products, synthetic materials and car parts, to name just a few.

Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) polymers are block polymers classified as thermoplastic elastomers. Thanks to their architecture, they show amazing properties – they can change and regain shape when subjected to pressure force. When heated, they act like liquids, when cooled, they return to solid states. LG’s own trade name for their range of SBS polymers is Luprene.

Basic applications of SBS polymers application:

  • Asphalt (bituminous pastes)
  • Felts (hydroinsulations)
  • Adhesives
  • Shoe soles
